Were you itching for the weekend a little earlier than usual this week? Well, it is almost here. I always thought that a good weekend started off with a good dance track. Keeping with the 90s theme of recent Friday Fun Posts, this feels like a good week for one of the dance tracks of the 1990s. "This is How We Do It" was #1 in 1995 and can still be heard in many a DJ set today. Have a great weekend.

Americana August Music Series in Mount Pleasant

Americana Extras: Homemade pie baking contest! Bring your favorite homemade pie to share and enter to win a surprise Americana treasure (and the title and fame to go with it!). Cover charge is $10. Event page.
Americana August Lunch and Bluegrass: On August 4 at 11:30am at the Scooby Doo Mansion (3423 Oakwood Terrace NW), we will be featuring The Honey Dewdrops from Charlottesville, VA and a visit from a surprise DC Food Truck! Event page.
Americana August Culminating Evening: On August 9 at 8pm at Cellar Door (826 7th St. NE) we will be featuring Jill Andrews from Knoxville, TN. Americana Extras: Free ice cream treats for each attendee. Cover charge is $25. Event page.
In the spirit of American hospitality, the first twenty people to buy their bundle package tickets via PayPal ($35 for all three days) will receive Americana August memorabilia, VIP seating, and a beer at each show. (Paypal page here) We hope to see you there!"

Check out the individual event pages for more information on each performer and other details. In a month which seems to see fewer fun, creative, and locally run activities than others, this is a welcome series. And right in out backyards, too.

YO! Sushi is Fun, Veg Friendly
To contact us Click HERE
YO! Sushi opened its first American restaurant last week right here in DC. The Union Station location is on the main concourse in busy West Hall near Chipotle, Potbelly, Chop't, and the also just-opened Roti. YO! is a self-serve sushi place, at which you literally grab your desired dish from a moving conveyor belt. Diners can also order from a fairly extensive menu via a server.
There's a good mix of hot prepared food, sushi, maki, soups, and appetizers. Each dish is served in a color coded bowl or plate. When you're done, the server counts up the total and dispenses your bill seat-side. Some plates are as low as $2.50. Great place for an in-and-out, affordable lunch.
Also, there is a ton of vegetarian food. Lots of vegetable maki, veggie yakisoba, tempura, miso, and others I haven't had a chance to try. YO! has a breakout guide with more nutritional info. So, vegans can easily see what's safe to order (plenty!). FYI -- oddly the avocado roll, veggie hand roll, and inari are not vegan.
As much as I love the Union Station location, a planned location at 7th and H NW may be even more convenient; and busier. Looking forward to it.

Mount Pleasant Children's Puppet Hour

Here's a little something for the little ones. This puppet show is happening just across the street from Mount Pleasant at St. Stephen Church, 1525 Newton St NW. It's this Saturday, August 11 at 4:00PM. Saturday's performance will be fourth iteration of this puppet show. Besides having an awesome sounding line up of performers, this is also a benefit for BloomBars, an arts space on 11th Street in Columbia Heights. Good show, good cause, good location. Win-win-win. From the organizers:

"It's the Mount Pleasant Children's Puppet Hour 4th Edition! If you liked MPCPH numbers 1, 2 and 3, you're going to love number 4!
Saturday, August 11th at 4:00. We'll be at Saint Stephen's church again: 1525 Newton Street NW
This time we'll be in the auditorium space, which is the door on the West side of the building.
Our line-up this time includes some of your old favorite performers, plus two new-comers:
-Patty "Miss Patty" Reeber, who you may know from the Cleveland Park library, presents the Chinese legend "Yi and The Ten Suns."
-Mount Pleasant's own David Greenfieldboyce presents two shorts, "Sandwich" and "Colors."
-Mount Pleasant's also own Bradley-Callahan players present an original show based on the myth of Pygmalion.
-And traveling all the way from Thurmont, Maryland, the Patchplayers present "Die Kleinepfeifer" (or, "The Whistling Gnome").
Our target demographic is 2-9, though a good time will be had by all!
Suggested donation is $5. The proceeds from this show will be contributed to BloomBars, Columbia Heights' community art and music space, to help pay for the installation of their much-needed new air conditioning.
We could use some volunteers to help get ready for the show and help out at the door. We'll need to set up chairs at 3:00. Let us know if you can help out!
Please forward this to your friends with kids, post it on your neighborhood listserve, talk it up at the playground!

Bluegrass Show at Haydee's This Weekend
To contact us Click HERE

I first started going to Haydee's for the drinks, then food, then the live music. Now that they've added the outside seating, I see more and more people there on the weekdays, enjoying a beer or chips and salsa or a meal. This weekend, you might want to eat inside because there is more music, and free! This time, the the band --The Fabulous Flea Market Band-- comes all the way from Norway.
The show is at Haydee's, 3102 Mount Pleasant Street NW. There is no cover charge. And the music starts at 8:00PM. Here's a bit about what you're likely to hear, from the organizers:
* * *Love songs for lumberjacks, bluegrass for punk rockers, serenades for sailors, drinking songs for desperate nights; love, insanity, murder, natural disaster and three legged dogs are just some of the themes covered in the Flea Market songbook. Part backstreet hoedown, part honky-tonk confessional, part big tent revival meeting, for the past two years The Fabulous Flea Market Band have steadily been winning new converts to their sweat-soaked, heartfelt vision, blending shadows from the Norwegian forest with darkness from the margins of America. Huddled around a single mic in the old-time string band tradition, the Fleas tear through all-original tunes, taking turns on banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar, upright bass and the occasional trombone.
