On the way to John Murray's still life class on Thursday, I gave myself a little pep talk: don't panic no matter what and just enjoy the ride. You know what? It worked! I didn't panic when I saw the dreaded golden delicious apples again. The fake fallen leaves that looked like clawed alien creatures gave me a bit of discomfiture, but not a full-fledged panic.
When John suddenly switched a small blue-and-white cup on the left side of the blue vase with a bigger, white bowl, I definitely didn't panic although I had already started painting. I simply wiped off dark red paints to make space for the bowl. I painted the lit ellipse inside the bowl, saw the red stain still showing on the left edge of the ellipse, and left it untouched. Great!
It went like this for an hour and half until I was finished. "Pumpkin and Blue Vase" is full of bravura, energy, and lost-and-found edges. In art there are moments of sweet triumphs and bitter disappointments. Thursday night I enjoyed the rare moment of a sweet triumph!
